Once again, Geylang Serai is ready to illuminate the streets with close to 50 light installations from 3 May to 16 June to bring the “kampung spirit to life”. As part of the Hari Raya Light Up 2019, there will be various light displays along Changi Road, Geylang Road and Sims Avenue. The mosque light installation symbolises new beginnings and renewed bonds of friendship while the “kampung” represents the community with family and friends from different racial groups.
On top of the light ups, be sure not to miss the yearly popular Hari Raya Bazaar in Geylang Serai which spans across Wisma Geylang Serai, Geylang Road and Engku Aman Road. With over 500 - 700 stalls selling non-traditional and traditional food and non-food items such as Hari Raya ornaments, traditional wears, carpets, handicrafts, furniture, and many more, you will be bound to find a keepsake!
While the bazaars are running and the lights illuminating the streets, activities will also be hosted by Geylang Serai. There will be an Annual Cultural Heritage Race on May 18, aiming to allow participants to understand more about Hari Raya and the Malay community. On top of that, on June 2, there will be a 12-hour-long ketupat-making session that will be held where participants weave ketupat shells for a good cause as it will be auctioned while the proceeds will be going towards supporting the needy.
If you are in Singapore during Ramadan, do not miss the opportunity to experience the rich Malay heritage, and when Hari Raya Aidilfitri comes around, greet our Muslim friends with a joyous “Selamat Hari Raya”.
